Practice for ADHD in Düsseldorf: What is the difference between ADHD and ADD?

Affected individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have a diminished capacity for self-direction and self-control. The disorder manifests itself in frequently occurring impairments of concentration and attention, impulsive and rash actions, as well as physical restlessness and a pronounced urge to move. ADHD is the most common psychiatric condition in children and adolescents.

Affected persons with attention deficit syndrome (ADS) are also unfocused and inattentive, but do not exhibit motor and hyperactive behavioral problems. For this reason, ADHD often goes unnoticed. However, both ADHD and ADD in children, adolescents and adults can have serious effects on everyday school or work life as well as social life.

Occupational Therapy

Children with ADHD often suffer from limitations in their daily lives, which can have a negative impact on their independence, quality of life, and social environment. Occupational therapy aims to improve the control of the body and body perception in a playful way, thus remedying disorders of movement coordination and perceptual disorders.

Psychotherapy

Behavioral therapy measures in psychotherapy are used to permanently change patterns of thinking and behavior. Those affected by ADHD/ADS learn through various techniques to better control their own behavior, to pause, to consider, and only then to act.

Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback is a computer-based training method that helps patients visualize and regulate their own brain activity. Desired behaviors such as concentration and attention neurofeedback are thereby reinforced through reward and internalized through repetition.

Group therapy

In addition to individual appointments, Vivare Health Center also provides therapy in group settings. In this way, those affected learn to deal with typical problems and conflicts in the group and to develop coping strategies, to better understand the perspective of others, and to improve interpersonal communication.

ADHD and ADD can be a massive burden for sufferers. However, the disorders can be treated very well nowadays thanks to various therapeutic options. At Vivare Health Center, the main methods used are occupational therapy, psychotherapy and neurofeedback for the treatment of ADHD in children, adolescents and adults. At the beginning of ADHD therapy, there is always a detailed discussion, because people who are inattentive, impulsive and/or hyperactive do not automatically suffer from ADHD or ADD. Looking at symptoms alone is not enough to determine the disorder. In the course of an initial consultation or a psychotherapeutic consultation, our psychological psychotherapists carefully collect the patient’s biography, complaints and problems. This helps us determine if ADHD/ADS is present and therapeutic treatment is needed. The initial consultation also serves to get to know each other and to educate patients, parents and other caregivers about ADHD. Each therapy is individually adapted to the needs, strengths and goals of the patient in order to maximize the existing potential.

Treatment of ADHD in children and adults

If it is determined during the initial interview that ADHD or ADD is present, there will be four probationary sessions following the initial interview. In the course of these sessions, your treating psychological psychotherapist will make a diagnosis and, based on that diagnosis, develop an individualized treatment plan based on the child, adolescent or adult’s symptoms, limitations and needs. The planning always takes place in consultation with the patients.

After the probationary sessions, therapy begins based on the treatment plan. In the therapy of ADHD in Düsseldorf, various measures are usually combined with each other so that a comprehensive and sustainable improvement of the symptoms can be achieved. The therapy methods used at the Vivare Health Center include psychotherapy, occupational therapy and neurofeedback. In individual or group therapy, those affected learn to cope better with ADHD using the various therapy methods. Cooperation with parents and other caregivers such as teachers also plays an important role in the therapy. This is the only way to achieve symptomatic improvement in all areas of life.

Goals of ADHD therapy in Düsseldorf

The goal of ADHD therapy in Düsseldorf is to curb hyperactivity, impulsivity, inattention, and other negative behaviors associated with ADHD/ADS and to replace them with new, positive behaviors, as well as to develop coping strategies for everyday life. In this way, the individual symptomatology of ADHD is to be sustainably reduced, the quality of life is to be improved and a healthy and satisfied further development is to be made possible. Usually, the therapy combines different approaches from occupational therapy, psychotherapy and neurofeedback. However, successful completion of therapy does not mean that ADHD is completely gone. Instead, patients learn to recognize and activate their own resources in order to master even difficult phases on their own. As a result, most ADHD sufferers require less and less professional support over time. With the help of therapy, children, adolescents and adults are thus able to implement the desired behavior and improve their performance in everyday life, at school and at work. The newly learned behaviors are usually accompanied by an increase in social skills, which improves social participation and enhances quality of life.

ADHD and ADD are among the most common conditions in childhood and adolescence. Nevertheless, the disorder often goes unnoticed because the symptoms resemble a child’s normal developmental behavior. It is often difficult for parents to recognize the disease as such. Affected persons can thus still experience significant impairments in their life as a result of ADHD or ADD in adulthood. Our competent and experienced team in child psychology and adolescent therapy is very familiar with the diagnosis of ADHD in Düsseldorf. We do not only consider the symptoms, but the patient as a whole: Both the developmental history, personal characteristics and the social environment are included in our diagnostics and therapy design.

In about 65% of children suffering from ADHD or ADD, the disorders persist into adulthood. Thus, about 2-4.5% of all adults suffer from ADHD/ADS. On the way to adulthood, ADHD symptoms change, resulting in a complex clinical picture that can encompass the entire spectrum of psychiatry. ADHD/ADS is therefore often particularly difficult to detect in adults. In addition, although adults are aware of their difficulties in everyday life, very few are aware that they are due to ADHD or ADD. Adults thus learn to cope with or hide impairments as they age, considering the difficulties normal.

There is a tendency for hyperactivity to decrease with age, but attention deficits and impulsivity usually persist in adults with ADHD. Symptoms of ADHD in adulthood are therefore often difficulties in organizing and structuring everyday life and work, concentration problems, difficulties in partnership, and problems with regulating emotions. As a result, ADHD in adults can lead to significant limitations and problems in everyday life, work and private life. In the worst case, the result is further mental illnesses such as:

  • Addictive disorders
  • Affective disorders such as depression, mania, and bipolar disorder.
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Personality Disorders
  • Sleep disorders
  • Eating disorders
