Youth psychology Düsseldorf: Vivare helps children and adolescents by means of psychotherapy
The Vivare team is always available as an adolescent psychologist in Düsseldorf. Adolescents face a variety of challenges in their development. These can concern, for example, one’s own body, social relationships or the emotional world. These changes are not always easy to manage. If stressful external factors such as crises are added to this, it can lead to sadness, anger, anxiety or aggressiveness. These changes and associated behaviors are part of the normal development of adolescents, but they can also be symptoms of a psychologically stressful situation. In this context, the support of parents is sometimes insufficient. To prevent difficulties from becoming an unsolvable and constant burden for adolescents and caregivers, it is important to get to the bottom of the cause and take countermeasures. For adolescent psychology in Düsseldorf, our entire team is available to answer any questions.

Mental stress in adolescents
Almost 20 percent of children and adolescents in Germany exhibit one or more mental disorders on an annual basis. In the wake of the Corona pandemic, the situation of young people has worsened. Increased depression, anxiety and eating disorders are evidence of this development. In our Vivare Health Center we approach the investigation of the mental problems of the adolescents with the utmost attentiveness and counteract them with occupational therapy measures.
Recognize and manage psychological problems
Especially in adolescents, it is often difficult to tell whether changes in behavior are part of normal development or symptoms of a mental illness, because the characteristics are similar. To identify mental illness in adolescents, the changes need to be looked at closely. Do young people drift away from parents or caregivers for no reason, but continue to pursue hobbies and spend time with friends? Then there is usually no need to worry, as this is a normal development in the course of growing up. However, if there are stressful situations or experiences that have led to the change in behavior, or the adolescent completely turns away from family, friends, and recreational activities for an extended period of time, there may be a mental health problem.
Therapy begins with an initial interview in which we consider the adolescent as a whole. In the course of this diagnosis, problems and questions of the adolescent are discussed as well as a look at the developmental history of the adolescent. Furthermore, in the course of diagnostics we deal with personal factors such as attention, learning ability and logical thinking, character, motivation, behavior as well as the social environment of the adolescents. Parents and caregivers are also interviewed during the diagnostic process so that we can get a holistic picture of the situation.
Based on the results of psychological diagnostics, individual treatment plans are created, which are based on occupational therapy measures. With occupational therapy as a method of treatment, we aim to reduce the pressure of suffering, to overcome psychological problems and to help the young people to become more independent, self-confident and independent in everyday life. The exact treatment and duration depend on the severity and nature of the mental illness.
Our team at Vivare, consisting of experienced youth psychologists from Düsseldorf, provides individualized care for each patient. In doing so, we always proceed empathetically and professionally. The treatment plan is discussed in advance with the patients and their caregivers, so that any concerns, wishes and uncertainties are taken into account. It is important to us to create a trusting relationship with the young people. Because only if they always feel well taken care of, understood and respected at the Vivare Health Center, an effective and sustainable treatment of the mental problems can take place.
When should you contact an adolescent psychologist in Düsseldorf?
Warning sign
It is often difficult to recognize symptoms of mental illness in adolescents. However, the following questions can help to better classify the situation: Are the behavioral changes preceded by a reason such as a breakup, a move, the death of a loved one, pressure to perform, or bullying? Are the behavioral changes long-term? Is the adolescent distancing himself not only from parents, but also from friends and leisure activities? If such warning signs are noticed, the situation should be monitored more closely. If there is no improvement, an attempt should be made to address the problem and, if necessary, appropriate support should be sought from a youth psychologist in Düsseldorf or the surrounding area.
We support young people with the following problems, among others:
- ADHD/ADS
- Eating disorders
- Depression
- Anxieties (social anxiety, performance anxiety, etc.)

Parenting Therapy
It can often be very stressful for parents and caregivers to witness aggression, anxiety, frustration, self-injury, isolation, or meltdowns in adolescents. Important things about youth psychology Düsseldorf
What is the difference between psychologists, psychiatrists and psychotherapists?
Both psychologists and psychiatrists deal with mental health and can work as psychotherapists, but they differ in their training. Psychiatrists have completed medical school and residency training in psychiatry and psychotherapy. Psychiatrists are not only allowed to conduct therapeutic talks, but also to prescribe medication such as antidepressants. Psychologists, on the other hand, have a degree in psychology. If they wish to work as psychotherapists, they still need three to five years of additional training, which ends with a state license. This entitles the holder to practice psychotherapy independently. Unlike psychiatrists, they are not allowed to prescribe medication, but work with therapeutic discussions and cognitive methods such as occupational therapy.
What is the process of treatment with occupational therapy for mental illness?
In our therapy center, we primarily treat children and adolescents, but also adults suffering from psychological problems or other limitations, with occupational therapy treatments. In this context, treatment with occupational therapy aims to build up or restore the patient’s emotional, mental and social abilities. This is to be made possible by various methods. These can be, for example, handicraft or creative techniques, counseling, joint diagnostics and goal development, practical living, planning tasks or communicative and perceptual measures. In this way, it should be possible to regulate everyday life oneself for as long as possible and to participate in life with self-confidence. The earlier the mental illnesses of young people are recognized and treated, the greater the chances of recovery.
From what age can adolescents visit the Vivare Health Center?
At our Vivare Health Center, we treat children and adolescents as well as adults, specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry. So basically we can treat children and adolescents psychotherapeutically from birth to 21 years of age, but also patients beyond that age. Young people who have reached the age of 14 can independently make an appointment and come by. Of course, parents or other caregivers can also come along if they wish. Before the treatment starts, we have an initial conversation, which is about us getting to know the patient and the patient getting to know us. After the diagnosis, the further procedure and the treatment plan are discussed together. No matter what concern is stressing you or your child out, angry, scared or sad, nothing has to be embarrassing or uncomfortable in front of us. We are here to support you with any mental health issues. No matter how long the path is, it begins with the first step. And this important step is already taken when help is sought.
What costs will I incur?
Vivare Health Center is a cash practice. We therefore treat patients with statutory health insurance, patients with private health insurance and those entitled to assistance, as well as self-pay patients. Patients with statutory health insurance can book four probationary sessions without submitting an application. An initial application can then be made to cover the cost of 60 sessions. If an extension of therapy is appropriate, an additional 20 therapy sessions may be requested. The cost of these units is then borne entirely by the health insurance company. Whether and to what extent the costs are covered for privately insured persons and persons entitled to an allowance depends on the respective insurance or allowance. Contractual provisions should therefore be clarified in advance. Self-pay patients bear the entire cost of therapy themselves. The fee is based on the fee schedule for therapists (GebüTh) according to the recommendations of the professional associations. The expenses can subsequently be claimed as medical expenses for tax purposes.
